How to Summarise a Long PDF
Get through a 200-page report without reading all of it — what to extract, how to structure it, and what a summary will always miss.
Long documents arrive faster than anyone can read them. A summary is not a substitute for reading the parts that matter — it is a way of finding out which parts those are.
Summarise a PDF
- 1Open the AI Summarizer and add your document.
- 2Let it extract the text and produce a summary.
- 3Read the summary to locate the sections that matter to you.
- 4Read those sections properly in the original.
Summarise a section, not the whole thing
A summary of 200 pages is necessarily shallow — it has to compress everything equally, so nothing gets attention. Extract the chapter or section you care about and summarise that instead. Ten pages summarised into a paragraph is genuinely useful; two hundred pages summarised into a paragraph is a table of contents with extra words.
What summaries reliably miss
- Qualifications and exceptions, which are exactly where the risk lives.
- Numbers in tables, which rarely survive summarisation intact.
- The significance of something absent — a summary cannot report what is not there.
- Tone and emphasis in a document where those carry meaning.
- Cross-references between distant sections.
For a contract, a regulatory filing or anything with legal consequence, treat a summary strictly as a navigation aid. The obligation is in the text.
Using the document with an AI tool yourself
Converting to Markdown first produces a much better result than pasting raw extracted text: headings and lists survive, so the model can be asked about a named section rather than about an undifferentiated wall of prose.
Privacy
Summarisation that runs on a server sends the document to it. For a published report that is irrelevant; for a client file or an unreleased set of accounts, it is a disclosure. Check where the processing happens before you summarise anything confidential — and note that this is a separate question from where the file was converted.
A workflow for a long report
- 1Read the contents page and the executive summary — often the whole answer.
- 2Summarise to find where your topic is discussed.
- 3Extract those pages into their own file.
- 4Read them properly.
- 5Search the full document for key terms to catch anything the summary skipped.

Open SummarizerFrequently asked questions
How accurate are AI summaries?+
Good at capturing the main argument, unreliable on specifics — figures, dates and conditions. Verify anything you will act on.
Can I summarise a scanned document?+
After OCR. Without it there is no text to work from.
Is my document uploaded when I summarise it?+
It depends on the tool. Server-based summarisation transmits the text; check before using it on anything confidential.
What length should a summary be?+
Long enough to be useful — a paragraph per major section beats one paragraph for a whole report.
